Roh Moo-hyun
Profile

Roh Moo-hyun, Millenium Democratic Party Presidential Candidate, born in 1946, attended elementary and middle school in Kimhae, South Kyeongsang Province and high school in Pusan.
He completed mandatory military service in 1971 and, in 1977, passed the state-administered National Judiciary (Bar) Exam, serving as Judge at Taejon Regional Court. Shortly after, he began private practice as a tax lawyer.
The 1981 "Boolim Incident" inspired his human rights law career. In that year two-dozen students were apprehended, without arrest warrant, for the possession of banned ideological literature by the then draconian dictatorial government authorities and tortured for almost two months [57 days]. Mr. Roh, took the case at personal risk and, having seen one of the students toe nails torn off as the result of torture, was shocked into the life-changing decision of henceforth acting on behalf of the disenfranchised and underprivileged.
In the 1980s, he won nationwide recognition as a human rights lawyer and civil rights leader and, in 1988, was elected to the National Assembly. In the same year, he earned nationwide fame as a "star" lawmaker at the 5th Republic (Chun Doo-hwan Administration) Irregularities Parliamentary Fact-finding Hearing for his articulate and down-to-earth image.
He has been acclaimed as a man of principle for his longstanding and persevering adherence to his political beliefs. In 1990, he rejected a politically motivated three party merger between the ruling and opposition parties. In Pusan, his opponent party's political home turf, he ran unsuccessfully, twice for the National Assembly and once for mayor, testaments to his determined fight against the nation's debilitating regionalism.

In 2000, he served as Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. In 2001, he was appointed as ruling Millennium Democratic Party Supreme Council Member and Standing Advisor, prime party leadership positions.

April this year, he won Korea's first popular Presidential primary election, winning over 70% of the MDP's 70,000 strong electoral college votes in almost all regions nationwide. At the Seoul MDP Convention, on April 27, 2002, the final day of the one-and-a-half-month-long sixteen primary elections, Roh Moo-hyun was officially nominated as Millennium Democratic Party Presidential Candidate.
